Hiking

The Smedenpoort is one of the four remaining city gates of Bruges. The first gate dates from 1297-1299, but was rebuilt in 1367-1368. Later it was rebuilt several times. Characteristic of this gate is that, just like the Ezelpoort, it is completely surrounded by water. In 2012, a pedestrian bridge was built on both sides of the gate. This intervention made it possible for pedestrians to walk around the gate, and for cyclists to use the small gate passages, keeping them separate from car traffic.
