Surrounded by remnants of ancient settlements, farms and burial mounds, the amusingly-named Brown Willy is Cornwall’s highest point at 1,378 feet (420 m). While there’s no absolute etymology, this prominent hill is most often translated as ‘highest hill’ so technically there’s no sniggering required.

Rising from Bodmin Moor, you’ll find the hiking trails to Brown Willy are gentle ascents over rugged, grassy terrain. At the summit, a cairn and trig point confirm you’ve made it to the peak but you’ll be far more interested in the vast, 360 degree view.

Rugged terrain and beautiful views

Hikes up Brown Willy can be started from plenty of surrounding roads and villages but, as this is open moorland, be careful not to wander into any of the numerous bogs surrounding the hill.

From the summit, you’ll be able to see nearby tors such as Rough, Catshole and Garrow. To the east, Leskernick Hill is the site of neolithic settlements and Rough Tor is home to Bronze Age stone circles. Brown Willy itself is no stranger to ancient hut circles, so keep a lookout.

Stark and heather-clad, Bodmin Moor is beautiful throughout the year. Climbing Brown Willy in the colder months often brings mist, cloud and drizzle but there’s something about overcast days that makes it even more atmospheric.

Summer and autumn turn the landscape purple with heather flowers and the balmy weather makes for excellent hiking conditions. Despite its modest height, the weather can still be changeable so prepare well for your adventures.

    Hiking

The highest point in Cornwall and a UK designated Marilyn. I think the best way to go up Brown Willy is to do a loop and come in from the south to make a nice 8-mile (13 km) hike of it and include Rough Tor on the way back. Otherwise do it the shorter way from Rough Tor car park. A great little hill to do.
