Built in **1924**, Duncansby Head Lighthouse watches over the most northeastern point of mainland Great Britain and the dangerous waters of the Pentland Firth.
It is a rather peculiar lighthouse: its square tower measures only **11 metres**, but being on the cliffs its light is 67 metres above the sea and reaches about **21 nautical miles (39 km)**. It emits a white flash every 12 seconds.
Since **1997 it has been fully automated**, so lighthouse keepers no longer live here and the interior cannot be visited.
