A huge sea cave carved over thousands of years by the sea and by a river that today falls in the form of a waterfall inside the cavern itself. Its name comes from Old Norse and means something similar to "cave" or "hiding place", a reminder of the Viking presence on this coast.

Local tradition has it that for centuries it was a refuge for smugglers and the scene of rather dark stories; one legend even links the cave to Donald MacMurchow, a man from the Clan Mackay accused of murders and plunder. Amidst the roar of the waterfall, the darkness, and the peat-stained, whisky-coloured water, it is one of the most characterful corners of northern Scotland.
