The originally Romanesque church in the first courtyard of the castle was probably built between 1220 and 1235 by the significant Czech noble family of Bavors of Strakonice. The current main nave with choir and narrow south aisle date from this period. Shortly thereafter, before the year 1243, it was donated by Bavor I to the Order of Saint John, better known by the designation Knights of Malta or Hospitallers. It served as the monastery church of the Hospitaller commandery.
