Built in 1963, Big Qualicum Hatchery uses a range of spawning channel and hatchery enhancement techniques to bolster the populations of Pacific salmon in the Qualicum River. Scientific research at the site has also improved our understanding of salmonid behaviour, increasing the available data for study.
