Set just a little north of Dartmoor’s famous Haytor Rocks, hikes up Hound Tor bring you to a much more jumbled granite outcrop. Like many places amongst the national park’s rugged terrain, Hound Tor has legends and myths attached to it and is said to resemble a pack of dogs. Perhaps the inspiration for Conan Doyle’s ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’, exploring this well known hill in Dartmoor’s common mist can certainly be an eerie experience.

A natural playground of granite

You can reach Hound Tor from any direction although access is via Dartmoor’s narrow, winding roads. There’s a car park at the north extent of the tor and in no time you’ll be rambling about the rocky outcrop. The views from here are vast and even better if you scramble atop the granite. Haytor is visible south and Dartmoor sweeps away in all westerly directions.

Hound Tor’s other draw is its neighbouring medieval village, Hundatora. Dartmoor is littered with ancient ruins but this more recent village is one of the best preserved. Turn your Hound Tor hike into an all day adventure by roaming the neighbouring tors and rocks. Greator, Honeybag and Haytor are all easy to reach. Fancy a dip on your hike? Find wild swimming spots at Becka Brook to the south east.

Lustleigh and Bovey Tracey to the east are good to find a bite to eat whilst B&Bs, hotels and hostels are dotted throughout the area. It’s legal to wild camp on the moor but you must check the national park authority’s map to choose a permitted area. Dartmoor is a tick hotspot, so always check your skin thoroughly after hiking and wear long socks and trousers.

    Hiking

Hound Tor is a breathtaking granite outcrop that rewards those who climb to the top with magnificent views over Dartmoor. According to legend, these rocks used to be hunting dogs, a story that may have inspired Sherlock Holmes' most famous case, Hound of the Baskervilles.
