Hiking

Nature reclaims a lot, and so you would just walk past this place steeped in history without suspecting where you are walking across...

... if this sign would not indicate it!

I've passed by here many times and sometimes I stop and imagine how much effort this wall took and what went into building it.

Was it perhaps the murder of Archbishop Engelbert von Berg by Count Friedrich von Isenberg in Gevelsberg? Or were they feuds between those from Berg and those from Mark?

A rampart and ditch system, probably by Adolf VI. von Berg (1308-1343) as a border between the dominions of the Counts of Berg and those of the Mark.
This ground monument, which later also marked the border between Westphalia and the Rhineland, extended over a length of approx. 15 km
from the Ennepe valley to the Wupper.

The Bergische Landwehr is a pre-modern system of ramparts and ditch structures (Landwehren), which were originally equipped with impenetrable hedges (so-called Gebück) to secure the borders of the Duchy of Berg. They ran parallel to the borders at different distances, mostly on the slopes of stream valleys.
