The reservoir serves as the lower basin for the Waldeck pumped-storage power plants, as a flood control and balancing basin for the Eder, Edersee, Fulda, Weser, and Mittelland Canal rivers, and as a storage basin for the Affoldern run-of-river power plant. The lake is part of the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. The body of water is designated as a nature reserve, a Natura 2000 site, and a bird sanctuary, and is used for fishing.
