    Hiking

The River Walk is away from the main tourist crowds. Beautiful paths follow the river. From Conception Park and back, I recommend walking along the river and not taking the loop via the golf course.

Embark on the River Walk Mission Reach, a demanding 37.8 miles (60.8 km) hike that traces the San Antonio River. You will experience a serene landscape, rich with native Texas grasses, wildflowers, and diverse wildlife such as egrets and osprey. This extensive route involves a total elevation gain of 778 feet (237 metres) and is estimated to take around 15 hours and 34 minutes to complete, making it a difficult but rewarding journey for those seeking a long-distance challenge.

When planning your visit, consider starting early in the morning. The trail is known for significant sun exposure, so cooler, more solitary mornings are ideal to avoid the heat. While the path is predominantly flat and paved, its sheer length and duration contribute to its difficult rating. You will find convenient amenities like benches, drinking fountains, and picnic tables spaced along the route, offering places to rest and refuel.

This section of the River Walk stands apart from the busier downtown area, showcasing a meticulously restored 400-acre ecosystem. As you hike, you will encounter significant historical sites, including Mission Espada, and discover unique public art installations known as "Mission Portals." These features provide cultural depth and visual interest, enhancing the natural beauty of the river corridor and making the River Walk Mission Reach a notable experience in the region.
