The Berlin Gliding Club will be built on part of the site of the first German motor airfield in Johannisthal, where the VEB Kühlautomat factory was located during the GDR era. Near the former main entrance to the airfield, at the current intersection of Segelfliegerdamm and Engelhardstraße, an Antonov AN-2 will be placed to commemorate the beginnings of aviation, even though this aircraft never actually flew here.
