It is located in forests belonging to the Koszęcin Forest District, within the village of Piłka.
It was established by a decision of December 18, 1957, as a nature reserve.
Currently, its area exceeds 120 hectares, according to some estimates.
Its goal was (and is) to preserve "a mid-forest peat bog with pristine vegetation, which also serves as a breeding ground for cranes."
