The fortified village of Monteriggioni is one of the best-preserved medieval complexes in Italy. Built by the Republic of Siena between 1213 and 1219 on Monte Ala, it was created as a strategic military outpost to control the Cassia/Francigena road and defend the borders from Florentine incursions. Its extraordinary elliptical ring of walls made such a strong impression on Dante Alighieri that it inspired him to mention it in the Inferno of the Divine Comedy.
