Since the Ahr River forms a huge loop around the mountain crowned by the Saffenburg Castle, it can be seen from several sides during a hike. Depending on your perspective, the panorama changes, with vineyards below in some places, while forest is on the north side. The expansive view from the top undoubtedly rewards the effort of the climb (assuming the weather isn't hazy).

If you're hiking the Red Wine Trail near Mayschoss, you should climb the ruins of the medieval Saffenburg Castle and let your gaze wander over the narrow Ahr Valley and the steep, sometimes intricately divided vineyards. The hilltop castle stands in the middle of a bend in the Ahr River, and the view is truly breathtaking – whatever the season.
