General Gavin, American general, played a key role in the liberation of Nijmegen in September 1944 as part of Operation Market Garden. On September 20, 1944, he ordered his men of the 82nd Airborne Division to attempt the heroic crossing of the Waal in canvas boats. At this spot today stands the city bridge De Oversteek as a tribute to these liberators and the 48 American soldiers who lost their lives. The crossing proved to be crucial for the liberation of Nijmegen.
