In the 18th century, by decree of King Frederick II, typical, modest, single-story, half-timbered semi-detached houses were built for Bohemian weavers and spinners on a sand shoal in front of the Teltow Gate in Potsdam, in the Nowawes weavers' colony, now Babelsberg. The two-family houses also included garden land.
Many of the weavers' houses are now listed as historical monuments.
