    Hiking

This is a more challenging section of the Knobstone Trail that takes you alongside Johnson Knob. It has a steady climb with rocky, root-filled singletrack along the ridge. You’ll get some nice views of the forest and the valleys below, especially in fall, but watch your footing on the descents. Water is limited here, so bring it with you from Delaney Creek (always filter it). It’s a quiet spot that sees fewer hikers than other segments because it’s a side trail that not everyone does.

The Delaney Creek Dam Number 5 – Knobstone Trail - Johnson Knob loop offers a fantastic opportunity to explore the rugged beauty of southern Indiana's Knobstone Escarpment. You'll wind through dense oak-hickory and beech-maple forests, experiencing the distinctive "knobby slope" terrain that defines this region. Expect a challenging yet rewarding hike with plenty of ups and downs, providing glimpses of the expansive wooded hills, especially as you make your way towards Johnson Knob.

This moderate 5.7-mile (9.1 km) hiking route, with its 610 feet (186 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 2 hours and 33 minutes to complete. Parking is available at the Delaney Park area, which is a common access point for the Knobstone Trail. It's advisable to carry plenty of water, as natural sources can be unreliable, and consider hiking in the fall for the best weather and vibrant autumn colors.

Often called "Indiana's Little Appalachian Trail," the Knobstone Trail is renowned for its demanding nature and is a popular training ground for longer, more strenuous hikes. This specific loop provides a taste of that challenge, making it a great option for those looking for a significant workout and a true backcountry feel without committing to the full 58-mile trail. The trail is well-blazed, aiding navigation through this scenic central upland.
