Retired since 1851 because of his dysfunctional health, he died on August 7, 1853 in Graz, where in thanks to him for the creation of the parks on Schlossberg in 1859 a statue (by sculptor Hans Gasser) was built. He earned another income through the foundation of a disability fund named after him.
