Construction of the monastic complex began in 1447. In fact, planning for the building had been underway since 1424, following an emotional impulse sparked by the preaching of Saint Bernardine of Siena. Cosimo de' Medici promoted the construction.
The fact that the commissioner was Cosimo de' Medici and that the church's floor plan appears to be derived from that of the Bosco ai Frati monastery in Mugello has led to the project being attributed to Michelozzo di Bartolomeo, although this attribution has recently been questioned in favor of a connection with the architectural style of Lorenzo Ghiberti.
