    Hiking

This is the actual Punta Gorda, the most western cape along the Lost Coast Trail. The lighthouse of that name is a mile further south. Here the beach is only passable at low tide, consisting of a narrow strip of rocks and slippery ledges below tall cliffs. The tiny Conical Rock island stands out in the ocean in front.

Embark on a journey along California's wild Lost Coast with the Smith Gulch Creek beach – Punta Gorda Lighthouse loop, a rugged coastal hike that feels truly remote. This 6.3-mile (10.2 km) route, rated moderate, guides you over a mix of soft sand, pebbles, and rocks, past wildflower-covered hills and striking black sand beaches. You will encounter diverse wildlife, including sea lions and a growing colony of northern elephant seals, especially in spring, all leading to the historic Punta Gorda Lighthouse.

Planning your visit requires careful attention to tide schedules, as parts of the trail are impassable at high tide. The hike, which typically takes around 2 hours and 38 minutes with its 210 feet (64 metres) of elevation gain, starts from Mattole Beach Parking; arriving early is recommended to secure a spot. While day hikes do not require permits, overnight camping on the Lost Coast Trail necessitates a wilderness permit and a bear canister.

This trail is a segment of the famous Lost Coast Trail, celebrated as California's only undeveloped coastline where Highway 1 was pushed inland due to the challenging terrain. The Punta Gorda Lighthouse itself, often called "The Alcatraz of Lighthouses" due to its isolation, offers a unique glimpse into maritime history. This route provides a profound sense of solitude and an unparalleled opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural, untamed habitat.

The Punta Gorda Lighthouse – Cooksie Creek Delta loop from Gorda 2 offers an immersive experience into California's rugged Lost Coast, a place where wildness reigns supreme. This challenging 17.1-mile (27.6 km) hike takes you from black sand beaches and tide pools, past the historic Punta Gorda Lighthouse, and through steep, seldom-used trails in gloomy forests and open prairies. Expect varied terrain, from loose sand and rock scrambling to muddy sections, all while enjoying spectacular seascapes and the profound solitude of this remote region.

Planning is crucial for this difficult route, which involves 2605 feet (794 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes around 8 hours and 21 minutes to complete. You must check tide schedules, as certain coastal sections are impassable at high tide, making careful timing essential for your safety. The King Range National Conservation Area is very remote, so arrive prepared with all your supplies; there are minimal amenities or signage along the trail.

This loop is part of the King Range National Conservation Area, a unique stretch of coastline preserved because Highway 1 couldn't be built here. The isolation means abundant wildlife, including harbor seals and a growing colony of northern elephant seals near the lighthouse. The Punta Gorda Lighthouse itself, built in 1912, stands as a testament to the area's wild history, earning the nickname "The Alcatraz of Lighthouses" due to its extreme remoteness.
