An old watermill used to stand here. It burned down in 1996 and was later demolished. A hydroelectric power plant was built and commissioned in 2009. It has a capacity of 45 kW and feeds in approximately 95 MWh per year.

A watermill probably already stood at this location in the 13th century and was integrated into the medieval fortifications of the city (founded in 1245). It was located outside the city walls in front of the Mühlentor (one of the three city gates) named after it.
