The main church of Ponte de Lima remains faithful to the Romanesque style of the North, despite being built at a time when Gothic architecture was widely expanding. The church was completed in the mid-15th century, and later, during the reign of D. Manuel I, its tower was completed.
This was not the first main church of Ponte de Lima; it previously operated in a hermitage of the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit. With the development of the town of Limiana, it became necessary to build a larger church.
