The monumental provincial government building is located at the foot of the Martini Church. Since June 16, 1602, the Provincial Council has been meeting in the striking Statenzaal. This is unique in the Netherlands. In no other province have meetings been held in the same room for so long.

Cycling

The oldest part of the provincial government building dates from the fifteenth century. At that time the Sint Maartensschool was located there. After the death of Rector Praedinius and the outbreak of war, the building fell into disrepair. On June 20, 1601, the Provincial Council decided that a provincial house should be built and they focused on the old Sint Maartensschool, which was then empty. The Provincial Council met there for the first time in 1602.
