This moderate 5.7-mile (9.3 km) hiking loop, taking about 2 hours and 32 minutes to complete with 482 feet (147 metres) of elevation gain, is a fantastic way to experience the natural beauty of Minnesota's North Shore. You'll wander through picturesque birch and pine forests, following the peaceful Gooseberry River as it cascades over rocky cliffs. The trail offers captivating views of all five waterfalls within Gooseberry Falls State Park, including the more secluded Fifth Falls, providing a diverse and engaging journey through varied terrain.
Starting from Gooseberry Falls State Park, this route is generally considered manageable for most hikers, despite some sections being fairly rough with a few hills. It's accessible year-round, even for winter hiking, though you should be prepared for ungroomed conditions in colder months. The park offers ample parking, making it a convenient destination for a day trip.
A significant portion of this loop is part of the renowned Superior Hiking Trail, giving you a taste of this longer wilderness route. Beyond the waterfalls, you'll observe ancient lava flows eroded by water and can even walk across a catwalk underneath the highway bridge for unique perspectives. Keep an eye out for bald eagles and historical features built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, adding layers of interest to your hike.
