The location may be medieval, but it has direct references to ancient traffic routes: here the Roman road from Cologne to Trier was crossed by the Aachen - Frankfurt military and coronation road. This may also have Roman roots, but today it is only an insignificant commercial route. "Lechenhäuser", the isolation wards for contagious patients in the Middle Ages, were often located at busy intersections because their residents were often dependent on promoting the travelers' charity by blocking roads.
