The Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Gymnasium is an impressive multi-part brick building in the Neo-Gothic style, characterized by a representative central portal. It was inaugurated at the end of the 19th century as a royal grammar school for boys.
It received the name „Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Gymnasium“ in 1931. Friedrich Ludwig Jahn was a German educator and politician. He initiated the German gymnastics movement at the beginning of the 19th century and was known as „Turnvater Jahn”. He lived for a few years in a house directly by the Marienkirche when he was a student in Salzwedel from 1791 to 1794.
