Embark on the Temescal Ridge Trail for a challenging hike that rewards you with some of the most expansive vistas in Los Angeles. This difficult 13.7-mile (22.0 km) route climbs 1980 feet (603 metres) over approximately 6 hours and 39 minutes, guiding you through diverse terrain from steep canyon switchbacks to open ridge fire roads. You'll traverse landscapes dotted with chaparral and sagebrush, leading to incredible viewpoints like the Ocean Overview Lookout, where the Pacific Ocean meets the sprawling city below.

Starting from Temescal Gateway Park, this trail requires good fitness due to its significant elevation gain and duration. While parking is generally available, arriving early is advisable, especially on weekends, to secure a spot and beat the heat. Be sure to carry plenty of water and keep an eye out for rattlesnakes and poison oak, particularly during warmer seasons.

Often lauded as one of the best hikes in Los Angeles, the Temescal Ridge Trail offers a unique blend of urban proximity and natural escape. It provides a dramatic transition from the canyon floor into the heart of Topanga State Park, showcasing a rich variety of native plants like California sycamore and coastal prickly pear. The trail's ability to deliver moments of quiet solitude alongside its famous panoramic views, including the Santa Monica Pier and Palos Verdes Hills, truly sets it apart.

Embark on the moderate Lemming Trail, a 9.9-mile (15.9 km) hike that takes you from Temescal Canyon Road all the way to the beach. You will gain 711 feet (217 metres) in elevation, offering a good workout that typically takes around 4 hours and 34 minutes to complete. As you hike, you can expect varied scenery, from shaded canyon floors to open ridges, with the iconic Skull Rock often visible along the way.

When planning your visit, be aware that parking at the trailhead usually requires a fee, though you might find free street parking if you arrive early enough. Shade can be limited on certain parts of the trail, especially during midday, so remember to carry plenty of water to stay hydrated. Dogs are permitted on the lower sections of the trail, but they are not allowed once the path crosses into Topanga State Park.

This route offers sweeping vistas of the Santa Monica Mountains, Santa Monica Bay, and the wider Los Angeles basin, providing a sense of escape close to the city. On clear days, you will enjoy unobstructed ocean views from the ridge, making the climb well worth the effort. In springtime, the area truly comes alive with vibrant wildflowers like poppies and lupines, adding a splash of color to your journey.

This easy 3.1-mile (5.0 km) loop, the Temescal Canyon Falls – Stewart Hall loop from Will Rogers State Beach, offers a refreshing escape into nature with just 447 feet (136 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 1 hour and 27 minutes. You'll wander through shaded canyon floors lined with pines and eucalyptus, leading to the seasonal Temescal Canyon Falls. The trail then ascends to an exposed ridgeline, where you're treated to sweeping panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the Los Angeles Basin, making it a perfect quick outing for all skill levels.

Parking is available at or near Will Rogers State Beach and Temescal Gateway Park, though designated lots may require a fee. To experience the waterfall at its best, aim for a visit after significant rainfall; otherwise, it might be a mere trickle. Spring is also a fantastic time to go, as the canyon bursts with colorful wildflowers, adding an extra layer of beauty to your hike.

Despite its natural beauty, this trail is conveniently located near urban areas, offering a quick and accessible outdoor experience. The area also holds historical significance, having hosted Chautauquas in the 1920s, and is home to wildlife, including rattlesnakes, so staying on marked trails is advised. The ability to connect various trails here allows for flexible looping options, catering to different preferences.
