Embark on the Wattacoo Pond Loop Trail for an easy 1.9-mile (3.1 km) hike that takes approximately 52 minutes to complete. You will gain 256 feet (78 metres) in elevation as you explore this scenic route. The trail offers rewarding views of Lake Wattacoo, its central feature, and winds through a diverse wooded forest. Along the way, you will encounter interesting rock outcrops and a tranquil beaver pond. The path itself varies, featuring sections of old roadbeds mixed with narrower single-track paths, providing a dynamic hiking experience.
When planning your visit, be aware that the trail includes sections with large, loose gravel and some steep inclines and descents, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended for comfort and safety. The route is marked with pink-purple blazes, but these can sometimes be faded, so pay attention to your surroundings. This loop is suitable for hikers of all levels, making it a great option for a quick outdoor escape.
Beyond the main pond, the trail leads you through a unique natural bog, which is home to rare plant species such as orchids and sundew. Keep an eye out for various wildflowers and birds throughout the year. If you visit during the winter months, you might also hear the sounds of a waterfall on Green Mountain, adding another layer to your experience in the Ashmore Heritage Preserve.
