The Great Elector's shipbuilding plans, which were closely linked to the work of the Dutchman Benjamin Raule, who was in Brandenburg's service, and the accelerated development of the Electorate of Brandenburg's navy, had an influence on the city's development. In 1680, Dutch experts, including Michael Mathias Smids, built a shipyard (shipbuilding yard) in the northern Dorotheenstadt in the area of today's Reichstagufer, where warships were also launched. Hence the name.

The Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin is a historic street on the right bank of the Spree in the Mitte district

: The street was built in the 17th century and was originally an important traffic route for shipbuilding. It was given its name in 1738 after two shipbuilders settled there.
This is where the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm is located, which is now known as the home of the Berliner Ensemble. The building was built in 1892 and is a listed building
