This is where the Old Rhine separates from the "Neurhein" since the Kühkopf was separated from the west bank by the Grand Duke of Darmstadt's hydraulic engineering director Claus Kröncke in 1828/1829 (so-called Rhine breakthrough). As a result, the Kühkopf became an island, encompassed by the new main stream and the loop of the old river course, which was called the Stockstadt-Erfelder Altrhein and became the Altrhein-Arm.

Up until the beginning of the 19th century the Rhine had no fixed river bed and found its own course depending on the height of its water level. As a result, there were huge floods, which not infrequently also claimed human lives

Cycling
The inlet of the Kühkopf is quite unspectacular, but the way there through the meadows is just brilliant
