Thanks to its almost germ-free and low-particle sea air, the place was an important therapy and recreation center for tuberculosis patients from the Second Empire until the discovery of suitable antibiotics. After the inauguration of the "Hôpital Maritime" by Empress Eugénie in 1869, further clinics were rapidly built, some of which are still preserved today and used for therapeutic purposes. Characteristic of these buildings are large terraces and balconies, where patients spent their days breathing.
