Hiking
Sheep maintain the moor in areas inaccessible to machinery. From April to October, the shepherd takes 600 to 700 animals into the Oppenweher Moor, keeping the core area of the moor clear of emerging woody vegetation.

Hiking
With a bit of luck you can see the flock of sheep that take care of the landscape here.

Hiking
Sheep aren't actually ideal for moorland. Their small hooves sink into the peat, causing problems because their hooves don't wear down sufficiently on the soft ground.
However, large parts of the Oppenwehe moorland are no longer pristine moors, but rather a savannah-like cultural landscape, similar to heathland, created through drainage and peat extraction. This makes conditions more suitable for sheep.
