In 1978, a collection of historical gas lanterns was installed at the entrance to the Tiergarten, between the zoo and the Hansaviertel and near the Tiergarten S-Bahn station, under the name "Gas Lantern Open Air Museum". The exhibition, which has now grown to 90 pieces, shows models from 1826 to the 1950s from numerous European cities and thus covers an extraordinary time and geographic span. In 1995, the entire Gas Lantern Open Air Museum was listed as a historical monument.
