O’Hara Woods Nature Trail

The O'Hara Woods Preserve loop offers a delightful and easy hike through a surprisingly diverse natural landscape in Romeoville, Illinois. You'll wander along wide gravel paths, dirt trails, and boardwalks, passing through rich forests of sugar maple and red oak, and over wetlands that come alive with skunk cabbage and marsh marigolds. The highlight for many is the breathtaking display of spring wildflowers, especially the "dazzling carpet" of Virginia bluebells that emerges in late April to early May, transforming the forest floor into a vibrant spectacle.

This 2.5-mile (4.0 km) route, with a gentle 66 feet (20 metres) of elevation gain, is rated easy and takes just over an hour to complete, making it perfect for a quick escape. Parking is conveniently available at the trailhead, and while the trail is generally smooth, some dirt sections can be muddy after rain. For the most stunning scenery, plan your visit for late spring to witness the incredible wildflower bloom, or in the fall for vibrant foliage.

O'Hara Woods Preserve is a significant ecological site, protecting one of the last undisturbed maple prairie groves in northeastern Illinois, a rare blend of woodland and savanna habitats. Beyond its natural beauty, the preserve holds a unique history, having once been known as "Dynamite Woods" during World War II, with remnants of old bunker foundations still visible. It's also a haven for wildlife, offering chances to spot deer, red foxes, and a variety of migratory birds.
