From castle construction to a burnt ruin: Originating from the medieval castle „Hornstein“, the palace developed over the centuries into a Renaissance residence before it almost completely burned down in 1774 in a devastating major fire.
Reconstruction under Goethe's direction: From 1789, Goethe took over the management of the palace construction commission. He steered the classicist reconstruction and significantly influenced the design of the magnificent interiors.
