The market square of Westerlo has the shape of an elongated triangle. This typical square shape, which occurs in many Kempen villages, points to a settlement of Frankish origin. There are a number of stately, imposing civilian homes around the market square. At the end of the market is the home of the Naets family, stewards employed by the de Merode family. The stepped gables of the Flemish Renaissance style are typical. This house initially followed the building line, but was demolished in 1925 and rebuilt further back because there were plans to widen the bend.
