Maen Castle, like Trevelgue Head, has two semi-circular ditches (Treryn Dinas has three) over the neck of a headland. It is one of the two oldest datable promontory forts in Cornwall and dates from around 500 BC. Excavations took place in 1939 and 1948-1949. The approximately 300 potsherds found cover the period from 400 BC to 400 AD.
