Around 1775, Abbot Ildephonsus Van den Bruel (1772 – 1792) engaged Laurent-Benoît Dewez (1731 – 1812), an architect in the service of Charles of Lorraine, the governor of the Southern Netherlands. He was commissioned to develop a plan for the construction of a completely new abbey, in which all existing structures would make way for contemporary buildings in neoclassical style.
