The land on which the post office stands is of prime importance: This was once the site of the "pile dwellings," the houses "on the Pohle," deeply anchored on stilts. These houses gave way to Bathhouse 1, an imposing half-timbered structure that replaced the salt baths on the Salzhof, which had burned down in 1856.
