Embark on the Moalepe Trail – Sacred Forest loop, a moderate 10.5-mile (16.9 km) hiking adventure that immerses you in Kauai's vibrant jungle. With 914 feet (279 metres) of elevation gain and an estimated duration of 4 hours and 38 minutes, this route takes you from open fields with ocean views into a dense fern and mixed forest, past wild coffee and banana plants. You'll traverse a single track through the Halelea Forest Reserve, surrounded by the green ridges of the Makaleha Mountains, offering a true sense of being in a prehistoric landscape.

When planning your visit to this area near Wailua Kauai, be aware that the trail can get muddy and slippery, particularly after rain. Sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes are a must, and poles can provide extra stability. Parking is available at the Wailua Game Management Area, so aim for an early start to beat the heat and ensure a spot. The trail is dog-friendly and shared with mountain bikers and horseback riders.

This Moalepe Trail Sacred Forest loop is celebrated for its stunning panoramic views and dense jungle environment. It connects to the longer Kuilau Ridge Trail via a wooden bridge, offering the option to extend your hike to a picnic area with sweeping vistas or even to the Keahua Arboretum. A distinctive feature is a popular tree swing, providing a unique photo opportunity and a moment of relaxation amidst the lush surroundings.
