In the Middle Ages, the so-called "Stapel" (pile stone) stood in the open air between the market and the monastery. Justice was dispensed at this spot on Fridays.
With the demise of the tradition, the Stapelstein also sank.
This significant piece of Rügen's legal history was accidentally "unearthed" in 1996 during the construction of the new "Ratskeller" hotel.
The enormous granite boulder has a circumference of 12 meters and weighs 35 tons.
