Thanks to the very poor sandy soil and the long-term fallow, the sites of the Kristalpark industrial area were able to develop into one of the best heathlands in Flanders, primarily for all kinds of invertebrates. In 2019, Natuurpunt purchased 49 hectares. Within the demarcated nature zone, the 'Special Six' of Balimheide, namely the heather butterfly, the common butterfly, the field fritillary butterfly, the large earwig, the spring fire spider and many species of rare bees, occur in high numbers. Grazing with sheep helps to preserve fragile biodiversity.
