Here you see an example of natural water purification in which reed plays a leading role. Reed has hollow stems, which allows oxygen to easily penetrate into the roots. In this root zone, bacteria in combination with oxygen ensure that the dirt fraction in the water is broken down biologically. The minerals that are released during this process are absorbed by the reed.

The pond on this boardwalk was constructed in 2001 and collects the water that has been naturally purified. The banks slope gradually so that amphibians can easily get in and out of the water.
