The biblical figure Samson adorns the fountain in the heart of the city. Samson, shown here as a lion tamer, embodies the strength of the city of Gera with his indomitable strength.

The fountain on the market depicts Samson defeating a lion. It was made by Casper Junghans the Elder of Rochlitz in 1685 from Falka sandstone. In 1931/32, the fountain was reworked from Lower Franconian shell limestone by Fritz Kröner, Rudolf Tympel, Otto Hager and Otto Oettel due to storm damage. A third version was created in 1979 by the artist Heinz Plath. He worked with Posta hard sandstone.
