    Hiking

Located in the Bull of the Woods Wilderness, there are two lakes in close proximity to each other. Both the Upper Twin Lake and Lower Twin Lake are pretty similar to each other, with refreshing blue water and dense tree aprons.

Some people have had troubles finding the lower lake as there isn't the best signage. There is an obvious fork in the trail that takes you there, but the trail itself is not very well maintained.

Embark on the Battle Ax Mountain and Twin Lakes Loop, a difficult hiking route that spans 14.7 miles (23.6 km). You will experience diverse terrain and gain 2604 feet (794 metres) in elevation, typically taking around 7 hours and 11 minutes to complete. From the summit of Battle Ax Mountain, you can enjoy panoramic views of Mt. Hood and Mt. Jefferson. The route also guides you past the beautiful Upper and Lower Twin Lakes, known for their impressive colors and reflections. In autumn, the vine maple and huckleberry leaves add vibrant hues to the landscape, making for a memorable experience.

Before you head out for this challenging hike, be aware of the access road conditions. The forest road leading to the trailhead is known for being rough and bumpy. A high-clearance vehicle is often required to reach the starting point, so plan your travel accordingly. Ensuring you have the right vehicle will help you get to the trailhead smoothly and start your adventure without issues.

This loop is located within the Opal Creek Wilderness, offering a true backcountry experience. The area is known for its ancient forests and pristine waterways, providing a sense of solitude and natural beauty. On clear days, you might even spot distant peaks like St. Helens from the higher elevations. The impressive colors of the Twin Lakes are a highlight, reflecting the surrounding environment beautifully.
