    Hiking

Elephant Head is one of the main overlooks in the Chelan Butte Wildlife Area. The trails to the top are mostly uphill with over 1,000 feet of elevation gain required to get to the overlook from the trailhead. The trails are smooth and well-kept, so the hike really flys by.

Elephant Head via Chelan Butte Trail

The Elephant Head via Chelan Butte Trail offers a quick, intense climb to truly spectacular views over Lake Chelan and the Columbia River. You'll navigate a mix of smooth and rocky terrain, starting on an old road before transitioning to a narrower path, all while enjoying an open landscape that bursts with yellow balsamroot and purple lupine during spring. The route is a consistent uphill push, rewarding your effort with sweeping vistas from the Elephant Head Overlook.

This trail is easily accessible a short drive from downtown Chelan, but be prepared for a full sun exposure as there's almost no shade along the entire 2.0-mile (3.3 km) route. It's best to start early, especially in warmer months, and carry plenty of water. Spring, particularly late April through May, is the ideal time to visit, not just for the wildflowers but also for more comfortable temperatures, though you should always be mindful of potential rattlesnakes.

What makes this trail truly stand out is its high reward-to-effort ratio; in just 1 hour and 12 minutes, you gain 1060 feet (323 metres) of elevation for unparalleled panoramic views. While the trail continues to Chelan Butte, many hikers find Elephant Head itself to be the most scenic and satisfying destination. The route also features charming, unofficial benches placed by a local enthusiast, adding a unique touch to your journey.
