Planning your ride on this difficult 11.7-mile (18.8 km) route, which involves 1352 feet (412 metres) of elevation gain and takes around 1 hour and 51 minutes, requires some preparation. Parking is typically available near the Tahoe XC area, which serves as a common access point for this network of trails. Given the challenging nature of the route, it's wise to start early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot and avoid the midday heat. Always ensure your bike is suitable for varied and potentially technical terrain, as some sections can be quite demanding.
This route is a fantastic way to experience a segment of the iconic Tahoe Rim Trail, a 165-mile loop celebrated for its world-class scenery and challenging sections. While the Whoop-dee-doo loop itself is often associated with more aggressive mountain biking, its inclusion here provides a unique blend for touring cyclists seeking a workout with rewarding vistas. The trail passes through diverse ecosystems, offering glimpses of alpine meadows and the vast expanse of Lake Tahoe, making it a memorable ride for those ready for a challenge.

The View of Lake Tahoe – Lakeview Ridge Trail loop from Dollar Point offers astounding panoramic views of Lake Tahoe, particularly from Kevin's Bench, but don't let the scenery distract you from its demanding nature. This 16.8-mile (27.0 km) route, with 1556 feet (474 metres) of elevation gain, is a singletrack characterized by loose and hard dirt, gravel, boulders, and technical sections. Expect rough ruts, roots, and rocks, making it a challenging ride that feels more like an expert mountain bike trail than a typical touring cycling route.
Planning your visit requires a realistic assessment of your cycling skills; this difficult trail is rated "Black Diamond" for mountain biking and is not suitable for most touring cyclists. The route involves a long climb and a difficult downhill section, so ensure your bike is equipped for rugged terrain. The best season for cycling in the Dollar Point area is typically late spring through early fall, avoiding winter conditions.
This trail was built in 2017 by the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) to replace the older, eroded "Elevator Shaft Trail," serving as a vital link between the Tahoe Cross Country Center and the Tahoe Rim Trail. Its design and conditions cater specifically to mountain biking, offering a significant challenge and a rewarding experience for those with the right equipment and expertise.
