Prepare for a challenging jogging experience on the Purgatory Trail, a difficult 8.5 miles (13.6 km) route that takes you through a beautiful forested gulch. You will gain 1442 feet (439 metres) in elevation, a workout estimated to take about 1 hour and 51 minutes. As you descend, you will follow the winding paths alongside Purgatory Creek and then Cascade Creek, enjoying serene woodland landscapes. Keep an eye out for quaking aspen and vibrant wildflowers, depending on the season. The trail features moderate downhill slopes and several creek crossings, leading you towards the notable Cascade Canyon Wye. This route offers rewarding views of rushing rivers and 360-degree mountainous vistas, including the impressive 13,000-foot West Needle Mountains.

Accessing the Purgatory Trail is straightforward, as it is conveniently located just off Highway 550 near Durango. When planning your visit, remember that the high altitude, around 8700 feet, can increase the risk of dehydration and sunburn, so pack plenty of water and sun protection. Always be prepared for sudden changes in weather conditions, as mountain environments can be unpredictable. It is also wise to be aware that bear sightings are possible in this area, so take appropriate precautions.

This trail is situated within the expansive San Juan National Forest, an area renowned for its diverse ecosystems and rugged beauty. The route's journey through a forested gulch, tracing the paths of Purgatory and Cascade Creeks, highlights the region's rich riparian habitats. The impressive backdrop of the 13,000-foot West Needle Mountains underscores the dramatic geological formations that define this part of Colorado. It offers a deep immersion into the natural environment, making it a standout option for those seeking a vigorous jog amidst stunning mountain scenery.
