Challenge yourself on the Boreas Pass, a difficult touring cycling route that covers 20.8 miles (33.5 km). You will gain 1810 feet (552 metres) in elevation over an estimated 3 hours and 23 minutes, making this a demanding ride. As you pedal, you will experience panoramic views across the White River and Pike National Forests, with clear sights of Quandary Peak and other Central Rockies peaks. The trail winds through large aspen groves, offering a beautiful backdrop to your journey, especially during autumn.
Planning your visit requires some consideration for the high altitude; the route starts above 10,000 feet and ascends to nearly 11,500 feet. If you are not acclimated to such elevations, you might find the ride particularly challenging. The best time to tour this pass is from summer through early fall. Be prepared for a primarily gravel road surface, which includes rougher sections and washboards, especially as you descend towards Como.
This historic route is notable for its remnants of a former railroad, adding a unique layer to your ride through the Pike-San Isabel National Forests. You can pause at the Peabody Switchback Overlook for expansive mountain landscapes, a highlight along the way. The trail's past as a railway line provides an interesting historical context to the natural beauty you encounter.

Embark on the Gold Dust and Boreas Pass Loop, a difficult touring cycling route spanning 19.2 miles (31.0 km) with a significant 1988 feet (606 metres) of elevation gain. This demanding ride, estimated to take 3 hours and 14 minutes, offers a dynamic mix of gravel roads and technical singletrack. As you pedal, you'll be treated to picturesque landscapes, including impressive views of Quandary Peak and the majestic Central Rockies. The route winds through large aspen groves, providing glimpses of the serene Goose Pasture Tarn and the expansive Breckenridge reservoir. Expect a challenging yet rewarding experience as you navigate varied terrain.
Prepare for diverse surfaces on this loop. While much of Boreas Pass Road consists of compact gravel, be aware that you might encounter rough, washboard sections, particularly on descents. The Gold Dust Trail presents a different challenge with its loose, rocky singletrack. Some parts of this trail can be very difficult to climb, and you may find yourself needing to push your bike through certain sections. For a more comfortable ride on the rocky downhill portions, consider using wider tires.
Beyond the physical challenge, this route offers a journey through history. You will encounter several historical elements along the way, such as an abandoned narrow-gauge railroad that once served the area. Look out for an historic water tank and the thoughtfully renovated Section House at Boreas Pass, which stand as testaments to the region's past. These features add a unique cultural layer to your outdoor adventure.
