The Haleakalā National Park – Crater Road loop from Maui offers an exceptionally challenging road cycling experience, climbing from near sea level to over 10,000 feet. The route takes you through a dramatic landscape, starting with lush farmlands and transitioning to stark lava rock and a moon-like volcanic summit with a massive crater and numerous cinder cones. You'll gain 4567 feet (1392 metres) over 27.8 miles (44.7 km), a difficult ride that typically takes around 2 hours and 55 minutes.
Planning your visit requires careful preparation for the extreme conditions. Expect rapidly changing mountain weather, including strong winds and significant temperature drops, so dress in warm layers and carry plenty of water and food. This route is internationally recognized as one of the most difficult road bike climbs, offering a unique "sea to summit" journey through distinct ecosystems. The summit is also famous for its stunning sunrises and sunsets, though sunrise viewing requires reservations.
